The Text
Bhagavad Gita

The 701 verses of the Bhagavad Gita comprise the philosophical kernel of the epic poem, the Mahabharata.  Its central narrative tells of the rivalry between two sets of royal cousins: the Pandavas and the Kauravas.  The Pandavas were five in number, moral and virtuous.  The Kauravas were a hundred brothers, immoral and vicious.

On the eve of battle, Prince Arjuna of the Pandavas was overwhelmed by strong emotions at the thought of going to battle against his own kith and kin.  Lost in confusion and delusion, the great warrior could not fight.  He surrendered to Lord Krishna for advice.  The text of the Bhagavad Gita is their ensuing conversation.

Chapter 2 of the Gita presents a detailed exposition of human perfection. Reflection upon
these philosophical values of life develops clarity on the path and the goal of self-development. This is essential for infusing direction, purpose, and enthusiasm into life.

End the day with a relaxed light vegan meal.

Arise early to make the most of the day

Derived from Atmabodha the Sanskrit composition of Adi Sankaracarya, this invocation directs us to contemplate at an early hour of the day upon the Self.

English Translation:
“Early morning, I contemplate upon Atman, the essential Self shining in the heart, which is existence, knowledge, bliss, supreme goal, fourth, which constantly cognizes the waking, dream and deep sleep states. I am that indivisible Brahman, Reality and not the assemblage of elements.”

One hour is given in the early morning to study Vedanta. This time is given for each individual to look within, reflect and contemplate upon the truths provided in the literature. Through daily study in the early hours of the morning, the intellect develops clarity and the mind becomes purer.

A hatha yoga class is offered to keep the body flexible and strong.

This invocation is directed to the sun. The Gayatri mantra is an appeal by the seeker to the divine Sun within to emerge from the cloud of desires and shine forth Its resplendent light.

English Translation:
“We meditate upon the adorable effulgence the divine Sun that may that unfold our intellects.”

“Physical fitness is conducive for spiritual development, just as fertile soil is for cultivation”

Fresh locally made vegan breakfast

Sunandaji will teach the Sanskrit text Bhagavad Gita, offering insight into the theory and practice of human development, and its culmination in perfection.

We will study:
“The Turkey and the Ant” by John Gay
“Even This Shall Pass Away” by Theodore Tilton

Relax in the beautiful Malibu hills for a farm fresh lunch.

Small Group discussion is an an exercise whereby you will work with other attendees and a graduate of the Vedanta Academy to formulate a specific question pertaining to Vedanta. It is through rigorous questioning that the intellect is developed and the principles can be understood.

There must always be chai!
